Step 1
Check your expiration date. Your license term runs two years. The Department of State sends a postcard to your business address and an email to the address on your eAccessNY account when renewal opens, but the deadline is yours to track. You can confirm your expiration date any time through the DOS license lookup.
Step 2
Complete 22.5 hours of approved continuing education. All hours must be finished before your license expires. There is no grace period that lets you keep working while lapsed.
Step 3
Collect your certificates. REEDU issues a certificate for each course you complete and reports your hours to the Department of State. Keep your certificates — you are responsible for producing them if you are audited.
Step 4
Renew through eAccessNY. Log in to your eAccessNY account, complete the renewal application and pay the state fee. Your CE must be recorded before the renewal will process.
Every licensed real estate salesperson and every licensed real estate broker in New York must complete 22.5 hours of approved continuing education within each two-year license term.
Brokers licensed for 15 years or more were once exempt. That exemption was removed by legislative amendment, and all previously exempt brokers have been required to complete continuing education since July 1st, 2021. If you stopped taking CE under the old exemption, you are no longer exempt.
If your license has already expired, you have two years from the expiration date to renew. You cannot perform any activity requiring a New York real estate license during that time.
All 22.5 hours must be completed before your license expires. New York does not allow carryover credit, so hours earned beyond the requirement do not roll into your next term. Of the 22.5 hours, 11.5 are fixed to specific mandated topics and the remaining 11 are electives you choose.

Of the 22.5 hours, 11.5 are fixed: 3 hours of fair housing, 2.5 hours of ethical business practices, 2 hours of cultural competency, 2 hours of implicit bias, 1 hour of recent legal matters and 1 hour on the law of agency. The remaining 11 hours are electives you choose.
